Our patients are first taken to the preliminary exam room by our well-experienced Optometric Technicians. Here, a series of pre-tests are done to get an initial screening of the patients' vision and general eye health. The tests performed here include:

  • Auto Refraction - Machine used to give us an estimation of how well the patient sees as well as curvature measurements of the eye.
  • Non-Contact Tonometer (NCT) - Measures the pressure of the eyes with a little "puff of air." This is important because if the pressures are too high there could be a concern for glaucoma and therefore additional testing may need to be done.
  • Frequency Doubling Technology (FDT) - Tests the patients' visual field or peripheral vision
  • Zeiss Visucam (optional*) - Takes a photo of the patients' retina and gives us a closer look at the inside/back of the eye. This test is especially important in patients with diabetes as well as those patients with a family history of macular degeneration or other retinal issues. It also gives us a look at the optic nerve to see if there is any concern for glaucoma as well as many other eye related diseases. Ask your technician for further questions or give our office a call.

After these tests are performed the patient is escorted to an exam room, where the technician completes the preliminary testing by recording visual acuities of the patient as well as obtaining their medical history.

Next, the doctor will come and perform the Refraction to determine the patient's final prescription for glasses and/or contacts. The doctor will also evaluate the internal health of the eye through direct opthalmoascopy and or a slit lamp evaluation which checks the health of the anterior and posterior segment of the eye including the eyelid, sclera, conjunctiva, iris, crystalline lens, and the cornea. If the Zeiss photo was taken, the doctor will review the photo and let you know the condition and health of the macula as well as the entire retina.
